Saved by good works?

“Concerning this house which you are building, if you will walk in My statutes and execute My ordinances and keep all My commandments by walking in them, then I will carry out My word with you which I spoke to David your father. I will dwell among the sons of Israel, and will not forsake My people Israel” (1 Kings 6:12-13).

For the shock effect, I love to tell people that good works save us. Consider God’s promise to dwell with the sons of Israel and not to forsake his people IF Solomon walks in his statutes and keeps his commandments. Therefore, God’s promise to dwell with us is conditioned upon the obedience of the Davidic king. This means good works save us. Not our good works, however, but the king’s! And because the Messiah, Yeshua, will always walk in his Father’s statutes and keep all his commandments, we rest safe and secure in God’s promise that he will never leave us or forsake us from now until forevermore (see Rev 21:3).

“For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 5:19-21).
